Great performance but Sawel still seek that cutting edge infront of goal.
Sawel welcomed Goytre to Cwrt Herbert in this re-arranged Welsh League Division Three fixture played in difficult conditions and at times torrential rain and wind. Sawel were forced to reshuffle their starting eleven after injuries to Steve Jones and Andrew Shaw who did manage to make the subs bench. There was also a recall for forward Gareth Jones.
Goytre visited Cwrt Herbert with confidence after only one defeat to league leaders Cwmamman last Saturday, however it was Sawel who once again were left frustrated after only picking up a point after putting in a performance that was more than worthy of securing all three.
Sawel started well enough using the wet surface to their advantage with some impressive passing that continued to put the visitors defence under pressure with Goytre more than happy to try to catch the home defence on the break. Sawel strived to make the breakthrough and could have had two penalties for fousl on Mark Thomas and Billy Timothy respectively but what was to prove to be the story of the day the
referee chose to wave play-on on both occasions.
A combination of resolute defending and again a lack of luck in front of goal meant the home side continued to struggle to make the break through their quality of football rightly deserved and in a classic sucker punch it was Goytre who was to take the lead when a quick break down the left wing and a neat one - two gave their forward the opportunity to find the bottom corner giving the home keeper Josh Tobin no chance and Goyte the lead at half time.
The second half started with both teams sharing a degree of possession as the half progressed Sawel once again began to dominate. Sawel enjoyed the majority of the possession during the second half and Gareth Jones, Keith Phillips and Billy Timothy were all denied by stops from the visiting keeper while Daniel Triggs' shot crept inches wide as the home side became increasingly desperate for an equaliser.
Sawel won a succession of corners and it was from one of these that the home side got back on level terms which was nothing more than their play deserved. Paul Bromage rose on the edge of the six yard box to meet a corner with a powerful header to give the visiting keep no chance.
In the closing half hour Goytre offered little threat going forward but nearly regained the lead when a deflected shot was flying into the top corner only for an outstanding save from home keeper Josh Tobin to tip the ball round the far post.
Sawel continued to press for the winner and with only seconds to go they should have received a penalty as a blatant trip on Billy Timothy when he was about to pull the trigger was once again waved away with the referee justifying his decision by claiming to play an advantage that was immediately cleared forty yards by a thankful Goytre defence. The home side produced their best performance of the season but the game once again ended in frustration for the home side while Goytre celebrated a hard fought draw.
